Isle of Skye, Highlands, Scotland

The Misty Isle

The Isle of Skye is one of the largest Inner Hebrides at only 50 miles long but is breathtakingly beautiful. Part of the North West Hebrides which lie off the coast of Scotland it is very rugged and bleak - my kinda holiday.

I've only ever dreamed of going to Skye.

We drove. Well my boyfriend did. Yep, totally out of our minds! At least 24 hours worth of driving. In December.

We experienced the strongest winds we have ever felt thanks to the force of "Storm Frank" with gusts of up to 85 mph and lots and lots of flooding. I almost got blown off the top of the Old Man of Storr but we enjoyed every second of it! And we got engaged!

Road trip, anyone?

Where we stayed
I booked in September. Hotels wind down around Christmas so it was quite tricky finding B&B's with available rooms. I'm sure it would be easier finding spots in warmer months but, typical me I chose something out of the ordinary.

Uig Hotel
Uig
Set in a coaching inn dating from 1831, this family-run hotel is 1.4 miles from the Uig Ferry Terminal and 29 miles from Dunvegan Castle.

Skye Redwood House B&B
Greshornish
Set on the shoreline of a loch, these cottages, built to resemble farmstead buildings, are 10 miles from the historic 800-year-old Dunvegan Castle and 13 miles from Coral Beach.
